Gather virtually with other members of the Wisconsin Book Club for an engaging discussion on “Lords of the Ring: The Triumph and Tragedy of College Boxing’s Greatest Team” by Doug Moe.
Lords of the Ring tells the extraordinary story of how and why this popular college sport abruptly ended in 1960. This book revives the exciting era when college boxing attracted huge crowds, outdrawing professional bouts. On the same night in 1940 when Joe Louis defended his heavyweight crown before 11,000 fans in New York's Madison Square Garden, collegiate boxers battled before 15,000 fans in Madison, Wisconsin.
Liz Arbuckle, the Northern Wisconsin Education Outreach Specialist for the Wisconsin Historical Society, hosts this discussion. Prior to our meeting, Liz will send the virtual meeting link and some reflection questions to encourage a lively conversation. Participants will need access to a copy of the book, an internet connection and a computer or smartphone to fully participate in our discussion.
Cost: Free.
